The illusion of connection: why most artist networks are ghost towns

A tiny elite holds the keys to collaboration, leaving the rest of the ecosystem isolated.

We love to talk about scenes, communities, and collaborative leverage. But looking at the actual connections across 374 artists in this bi-weekly snapshot, the reality is much colder. Most artists are shouting into a void of one-to-one relationships. If you are building campaigns around the assumption of organic, peer-to-peer viral spread, you are likely betting on a ghost network.

The bottleneck at the top

Look at the ratio of large to small players in this snapshot. With only 6 artists sitting in the large network band compared to 328 in the small band, the collaboration bridge is incredibly narrow. We are looking at a ratio of just 0.02. This means almost all collaborative gravity is concentrated in a handful of hubs. If your A&R strategy relies on finding 'nodes' that connect different worlds, you are fighting over the same six assets. The rest of the field is operating in near-total isolation.

Stop hunting for hubs that do not exist

The median degree of 1 tells us everything we need to know about the current ecosystem landscape. For the vast majority of these artists, a collaboration is a dead-end street, not a highway to a new audience. Instead of trying to force viral peer-to-peer loops where the infrastructure simply does not exist, we need to build the bridges ourselves. Stop overpaying for hypothetical network effects and start engineering direct, high-value connections for the 40 medium-band artists who actually have the room to scale.
