The 1% Club: Why Pop and Soul Are Over-Indexing in This Week's Scout Pool*
Out of nearly 3,000 catalog artists, only 33 cleared the scout score threshold of 80 this week—with contemporary r&b and pop leading the charge.
* Built on the vocumi data set as of this publish date. Full note.
We just ran the numbers on our elite scout pool—the 33 artists who cleared the high-potential scout score of 80 or higher this week. That is a razor-thin 1.12% of our entire 2,953-artist catalog. If you want to know where the sharpest ears are actually placing bets, look at contemporary r&b and pop. They are massively over-indexing compared to the wider catalog.

The elite 1% club
We are looking at a highly filtered group. Out of 2,953 catalog artists, only 33 made the cut this week. When we break down the score bands, we see most of these high-flyers sitting in the 80–84 range with 10 artists, and the 85–89 range with 7 artists. Only 3 managed to break into the 90–94 tier, and absolutely nobody cleared the 95 mark. This is a strict filter, meaning the artists who do make it here deserve your immediate attention before the rest of the market catches on.
Where the pool is over-indexing
If you are still chasing generic trends, you are missing the real signal. Pop and contemporary r&b are leading the scout pool with 6 artists each, representing a combined 36.4% of the entire pool. But look closer at the index: contemporary r&b is over-indexing by 3.05x compared to its catalog share. Dance-pop is right behind with 5 artists, while soul claims 4. These aren't just popular genres; they are highly concentrated pockets of high-potential talent that our scouts are flagging at a disproportionate rate.
