We love to talk about collaborative scenes, but the data shows a different reality. Across 645 connected artists on the vocumi platform this week, the average artist has just 1.96 connections. In fact, the median is exactly one. We are looking at a highly fragmented landscape where a tiny handful of players hold the keys to collaboration, while the rest operate in near-total isolation.

The illusion of the connected scene
Let’s look at the hard numbers. Out of 645 artists with active connections on our platform, 566 sit in the small band—meaning they have only one or two connections. The median degree is one. If you are signing acts based on the assumption that they are part of a thriving, highly collaborative local ecosystem, you are likely miscalculating. Most artists are building in silos. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it means their organic reach is severely bottlenecked from day one.
The 1% bottleneck at the top
Only five artists qualify as large hubs with more than ten connections. That creates a large-to-small ratio of just 0.01. The collaborative capital is concentrated in an incredibly tight circle.
